Skincare Services Q & A

Microneedling

If you are looking to improve fine lines and wrinkles, rough texture, acne scarring or your skin just needs an anti-aging boost, microneedling might be the treatment for you. Microneedling stimulates the body's wound healing process to create collagen and elastin in the skin. Schedule an appointment with Amélie by phone or online to learn more.

What is Microneedling?

Microneedling is also known as Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT). It works by creating tiny micro-injuries in the skin using a sterile, single use needle cartridge. It uses your body's natural wound healing process to create new collagen and elastin in the skin and one treatment can produce as much as you lose over the course of an entire year.

At Amelie we use SkinPen which is the first FDA approved microneedling pen that's cleared for the face and neck that has no risk of cross contamination. We can treat the face and neck for anti-aging benefits as well as acne scarring on the face.

What are the benefits of Microneedling?

Microneedling increases collagen production in the skin which can diminish fine lines and wrinkles, improve skin tone, remodels scar tissue, and can help some with pigmentation. One of the other major benefits of microneedling is the minimal downtime. You should expect 24hrs where you avoid heat, sun, and sweating of any kind. Your skin may be pink for up to 5 days and you will have an aftercare kit you use for that time but you may wear makeup 24hrs after your treatment.

You can expect an overall brighter, more radiant complexion, reduced fine lines and wrinkles, smoother skin texture, and more even skin tone. If you are targeting acne scarring with microneedling you can expect to see remodeling of the scar tissue as well which can dramatically change how it looks and feels. Results from a microneedling start at about 2 weeks with full results seen in about 4-6 weeks post-procedure. The team at Amélie might recommend microneedling:

  • More radiant skin
  • Improved fine lines and wrinkles
  • Improved scarring
  • Smoother texture

Is Microneedling Painful?

Microneedling is a relatively comfortable treatment. You feel the vibration and afterwards it feels like a sunburn or windburn, tender but not painful. We numb before we start and if for some reason you still feel discomfort we do have several other tips and tricks for managing discomfort at our disposal.

How Should I Prepare For My Microneedling?

Before your microneedling you should avoid:

  • All exfoliants and other harsh skin treatments
  • Waxing
  • Direct sun exposure
  • Tanning beds
  • Dermal fillers
  • Ibuprofen, aspirin, and other blood thinners

Following these steps minimizes your risks, failure to follow these can result in unwanted complications. After your microneedling you will have about 24hrs of downtime. Your skin may be red for up to 5 days and you will use a gentle aftercare kit. You should plan to avoid heat, sun, and sweating for 24hrs.

BBL

If you are wanting a brighter, more vibrant complexion then the Forever Young BBL photofacial is for you. At Amélie in Tigard, Oregon, the team offers BBL photofacials to target pigmentation and redness as well as overall skin rejuvenation. To consult with the team about getting an BBL photofacial, book an appointment by phone or online at Amélie today.

What is a Forever Young BBL photofacial?

The Forever Young BBL photofacial is a light-based skin therapy that uses Broad Band Light (BBL) to target hyperpigmentation and redness. Light is absorbed by melanin (sun damage, age spots, etc.) and absorbed by oxyhemoglobin (redness, capillaries, cherry angiomas) leaving your skin brighter and clearer. At Amélie, the team offers Forever Young BBL photofacials using the versatile Joule X™ from Sciton®, a leader in the medical technology industry.

When treating for pigmentation, Broad Band Light is pulsed into the skin to target pigmentation at varying layers of the skin. The light is absorbed by the melanin which coagulates the tissue. The body then pushes the dead tissue to the surface of the skin where it appears almost like coffee grounds on the surface of the skin before flaking off, leaving the skin bright and clear. When treating for redness, Broad Band Light is pulsed into the skin to target visible capillaries, diffuse redness, and cherry angiomas.

Broad Band Light also stimulates the production of collagen in the skin for overall rejuvenation. Boosting collagen production can reduce fine lines and wrinkles, improve the one and texture of the skin, and thicken the skin in areas where it has become thin.

What results can I expect from my Forever Young BBL photofacial?

A Forever Young BBL photofacial can lighten sun damage and reduce redness in the skin. In three treatments you can see a significant difference in the darkness of your pigmentation. Reducing redness in the skin can dramatically improve how the skin looks as well as how it feels. Redness from rosacea can cause heat which can be somewhat uncomfortable. We always recommend combining proper skincare with your facial treatments. A Forever Young BBL photofacial might be a good option for you if you struggle with:

  • Sun damage
  • Age spots
  • Uneven skin tone
  • Rosacea
  • Visible papillaries
  • Cherry angiomas

We always recommend a series of 3-6 BBLs for best results spread 30 days apart. During the initial series we are targeting damage in the skin, once we have achieved the results we want you will move into a maintenance phase. Your provider will design a program to maintain your results but we typically see people coming in every quarter for a Forever Young BBL to keep the pigmentation and redness at bay.

How should I prepare for my Forever Young BBL photofacial?

Before your series of Forever Young BBL photofacials, we recommend a consultation with the team at Amelie to get you started on skincare. Pre-treating with a tyrosinase inhibitor and SPF 30+ is something that we require for our clients. In the weeks leading up to your photofacial, you should avoid:

  • Direct sun exposure
  • Tanning beds
  • Self tanner
  • All exfoliants and other harsh skin treatments
  • Waxing
  • Dermal fillers
  • Ibuprofen, aspirin, and other blood thinners

Following these steps minimizes your risks, failure to follow these can result in unwanted complications. After your BBL, your skin may feel a bit sensitive in the days following your appointment. You should plan to avoid heat, sun, and sweating for 48hrs as well as direct sun exposure for at least 1-2 weeks.

AquaGold

If you are looking for the ultimate luxury skin treat, AquaGold is for you. AquaGold works by microinfusing a custom made serum directly into your skin using sterile 24k gold needles to plump and hydrate while giving you the glowiest skin ever. This treatment is amazing to treat yourself to before any big event. Schedule an appointment with Amélie by phone or online to learn more.

What is AquaGold?

AquaGold uses sterile 24k gold needles to gently infuse a custom serum deep into the skin. The serum typically includes a custom blend of potent ingredients like Hyaluronic acid, a variety of vitamins, growth factors, and tox. Each serum is customized to your specific skin and what your goals are.

What are the benefits of AquaGold?

AquaGold can reduce fine lines and wrinkles, plump the skin, reduce facial sweating, and increase radiance. After your treatment you will be pink for about 24 hours but your results will begin to be seen almost immediately depending on the ingredients in your custom serum. If you are getting an AquaGold before a big event we recommend scheduling it for about a week or two before so you can see the full results by your event. Some of the many benefits associated with AquaGold include:

  • Brighter skin
  • Improved hydration
  • Refreshed skin tone
  • Smoother texture
  • A radiant glow
  • Reduced fine lines and wrinkles

What happens during an AquaGold facial?

Your skin will be cleansed, prepped, and then the treatment will be performed. First, a 24k gold Hydrojelly mask will be applied for maximum hydration and to prep the skin. These masks create a vacuum on the skin, drawing water up to the surface of the skin to bathe it in moisture. Not only does this soften the skin but it makes it more receptive to the active ingredients

While the mask sets, a custom serum will be made according to your goals established with your provider. A variety of different active ingredients may be used and serums can vary from person to person. The serum will then be gently pressed into your skin. The 24k gold needles create microchannels in the skin and allow the serum to penetrate deeply and start working immediately. Most people find the sensation to be completely tolerable but we do have some comfort techniques available.

What should I expect after the procedure?

After your AquaGold facial your face might be pink and feel a little bit tender and tight. Avoid heat, sun, and sweating for 24hrs and continue to wear your SPF daily. You may wear makeup 24 hours after your facial but chances are you won't want to because your skin will be glowing! We always recommend pairing this luxury treatment with proper skincare not only to improve the health of your skin but also to maximize your results.

What is Subnovii?

At Amelie we use Subnovii by Cartessa which is the first FDA approved Plasma Pen in the US cleared for treatment of static lines and skin laxity. We can treat the face and neck for anti-aging benefits as well as acne scarring on the face. Plasma technology has been around and has been used in Europe for years. We have done extensive training with top Subnovii providers to give our clients the best experience and results possible.

Subnovii works by utilizing two low frequency wavelengths which interact with the gas on the surface of your skin to create a plasma arc. This plasma arc causes deep dermal heating to stimulate fibroblast production in the treated area to stimulate collagen production in the skin. Collagen is responsible for the framework below the surface of the skin. An increase in collagen production can help reduce fine lines, static etched in wrinkles, and tighten skin that has become lax.

What are the benefits of Subnovii?

Subnovii is great for stubborn areas that we can't target with traditional collagen induction treatments like microneedling or Halo. It is great for areas like upper and lower eyelids for lifting and brightening the eyes. Other common areas are smile lines, tech neck lines, etched in forehead lines, and marionette lines.

Results may vary, some people might need one treatment and some might need more. It depends on your anatomy, the quality of your skin, your dedication to aftercare, and your goals.

How Should I Prepare For My Subnovii Treatment?

Before your Subnovii treatment, you will attend a consultation with a member of the team at Amélie. Here you will receive your pre-treatment and post-care skincare as well as specific instructions on how to prepare for your treatment and what to expect afterwards.

After your treatment you can expect a week of social downtime where you won't be able to hide the dots and 12 weeks where you must avoid extreme heat and cold. Following these steps minimizes your risks, failure to follow these can result in unwanted complications such as hyperpigmention. After your Subnovii treatment your skin will be swollen, tender, and covered in tiny crusts in the treated area(s). These crusts will remain on the skin for about 7 days and should flake off naturally, do not exfoliate. Subnovii requires dry healing so any time you wash your face you need to immediately dry it and apply the provided Subnovii Healing Powder.

Chemical Peel

If you are experiencing active acne, sun damage, post inflammatory hyperpigmentation, acne scarring, melasma, or uneven tone and texture then a chemical peel might be a good option for you. Schedule an appointment with Amélie by phone or online to learn more.

What are chemical peels?

Chemical peels are blends of acids that help the skin quickly shed its outer layers. By removing the outer layers we encourage the growth of new, healthy skin cells. Depending on what you are hoping to target, your provider will select a peel containing acids to give you the best results.

The peels that we use are the VI Peels, the beauty of these peels is that they are suitable for all skin colors. For a long time darker skin such as Asian and black skin has had an increased risk of hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation associated with peels but with VI Peels we can treat the darkest of skin without the risk of additional damage. These peels contain specific ingredients to safely treat all skin tones using a targeted blend of acids to inhibit the over production of melanin in response to trauma.

Chemical peels can treat a variety of skin conditions revealing radiant skin. The peel itself is very quick and can be added on to many treatments including injectables, coolsculpting, and most skincare services. Most people are great candidates for peels even if they have sensitized skin. Pregnancy and breastfeeding as well as allergies and some medical conditions may prevent you from being a candidate. Here are a few things we can target with peels:

  • Active acne
  • Active acne
  • PIH (post inflammatory hyperpigmentation) and PIE (post inflammatory erythema). These are the red or brown spots left after a breakout or other trauma.
  • Melasma
  • Sun damage
  • Rough skin texture

Chemical peels are best when performed in a series of 3 spread 4 weeks apart. If you have melasma, you should continue to get regular peels to keep it under control. If you have active acne, consider checking out our Acne Bootcamp. Chemical peels can also be performed on the face and body! If you have any of the above skin concerns on the body, we can treat that. The most we can do in one visit is two areas at once.

What happens during a chemical peel?

Your skin will be cleansed and then prepped with a solution that bring the ph of your skin to around a 1. This step is super important for best results. After your skin is prepped, the peel solution is applied in 3-4 layers. Between each layer the solution dries for about a minute. Once the final layer is applied you are free to go. You will be sent home with an aftercare kit and specific instructions.

Once you leave the office, you will leave the solution on for 4 hours before rinsing it off and applying a treatment towelette. These towelettes contain retinoid acid which elevated your peel results. You will then rinse again and follow with the provided moisturizer. You will repeat this process at bed time the night of your treatment and the following night. During the day you will cleanse with the included cleanser and apply an anti-itch cream and SPF 50 daily.

What should I expect after the procedure?

After your chemical peel your skin will feel tight and shiny for around 2 day before you start to peel. When you start peeling it usually begins around the mouth with the forehead peeling last. You should expect around week of peeling where you are super gentle with your skin and very careful about sun exposure. You will use the provided aftercare and follow the aftercare instructions for a week before returning to gentle skincare.

When we say you will peel, we mean it! Don’t be shocked if you see big sheets of skin coming off. Do NOT pick or scrub at the skin coming off or you could cause scarring. You should allow it to flake off naturally but if it is getting in your way you can trim off the excess dried skin with nail scissors that have be cleaned with an alcohol wipe. Failure to follow your post-care instructions using the provided post-care products can result in unintended complications including pigmentation and scarring.

Dermaplaning

If your skin looks dry and dull, this amazing gentle exfoliating facial is available at Amélie. Expert cosmetic and aesthetic specialists offer dermaplaning soft, glowing skin. Schedule an appointment with Amélie by phone or online to learn more.

What is dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is a manual exfoliation of the surface of the skin which also removes vellus hairs (peach fuzz). It can sometimes be called microplaning or skin scraping. Not only does it make your makeup glide on like butter but it increases your skin ability to absorb products. Many times it is combined with more aggressive treatments because it gives us a blank canvas to work with.

What are the benefits of dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is a great treatment because there is no downtime associated with it, your skin feels soft and silky after, and it can be combined with many of our other skin therapies. Some of the many benefits associated with dermaplaning include:

  • Brighter skin
  • Improved product penetration
  • Refreshed skin tone
  • Smoother texture
  • Reduced fine lines
  • No peach fuzz

Is dermaplaning right for me?

To find out if you’re a good candidate for dermaplaning, the Amélie team reviews your medical history and examines your skin’s problem areas. They discuss your desired outcome to develop a personalized treatment plan that best matches your needs. We generally find that most people are great dermaplaning candidates unless they have active acne or a lot of skin laxity.

What happens during dermaplaning facials?

Your skin will be cleansed and then prepped with a solution to lift the cuticle. A sterile 10 blade will be scraped across the skin to lift off dead skin cells and peach fuzz. After your entire face has been done, products will be applied.

What should I expect after the procedure?

After your dermaplaning facial, your skin will feel super smooth. While there is no downtime associated with this treatment, you may notice some redness if you have sensitive skin or do a hard workout directly after. You may wear makeup directly after your facial but chances are you won't want to because your skin will be glowing!

What Add-ons Do You Offer?

You are welcome to combine your dermaplaning facial with a variety of our other skincare services in the same visit. We highly recommend having a consultation with one of our Amelie team members to see which add-ons you are a candidate for before booking. Some of the add-ons we offer are:

Laser Hair Reduction (LHR)

If you are wanting to reduce hair growth, laser hair reduction is for you. Laser hair reduction can reduce hair growth almost entirely for around 2 years before you need to do maintenance. At this time, we only offer this treatment to existing clients. Before your treatment, your provider will assess if you are a good candidate for laser hair reduction. To schedule a consult please call Amelie.

What is laser hair reduction?

Laser hair reduction is often called laser hair removal, it’s the same treatment but at Amelie we prefer to use the correct term. There is no such thing as permanent laser hair removal (the only truly permanent solution is electrolysis) but we can reduce the growth of hair in the treated area for about two years before you will need maintenance. There is a chance that your hair may not grow back at all or grow back very sparsely when it does.

Laser hair reduction works by utilizing pulsed light. This light is attracted to the melanin in the hair itself. The hair absorbs the light which damages the follicle causing hair to not grow back temporarily. The reason that hair can grow back over time is that there are stem cells inside the follicle that surround the hair bulb that can repair the damaged follicle and allow it to produce hairs again.

We treat in series of 6 spread 4 weeks apart. The entire series must be completed at the 4 week interval to see lasting results. Laser hair reduction can be done on the face and body.

What results can I expect from my laser hair reduction?

You can expect your treatment to feel like the snap of a rubber band every time the light flashes. It’s tolerable and quick. About two weeks after each treatment you might see treated hairs falling out. Less hair might grow back each month but the full series of 6 needs to be completed for full results. Areas we can treat with laser hair reduction include:

  • The upper lip and chin
  • Underarms
  • Bikini or Brazilian
  • Upper and lower legs
  • Upper and lower arms

How should I prepare for my laser hair reduction?

For two weeks before your treatment you should avoid sun exposure. If you are treating the bikini area, remember that swimsuit material is not enough protection from the sun. The light is attracted to melanin, it can’t distinguish between your hair and your tan. You will shave the night before or day off so that only the hair inside the follicle is absorbing the heat.

  • Direct sun exposure
  • Tanning beds
  • Self tanner
  • All exfoliants and other harsh skin treatments
  • Waxing
  • Dermal fillers

Following these steps minimizes your risks, failure to follow these can result in unwanted complications. After your laser hair reduction treatment, your skin may feel a bit sensitive in the days following your appointment. You should plan to avoid heat, sun, and sweating for 48hrs as well as direct sun exposure for at least 1-2 weeks.

To find out more about laser hair reduction and to see if you are a candidate from a trusted aesthetic specialist, call Amélie or reserve an appointment online today.
